About Sulfur Hexafluoride
Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF₆) is a synthetic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas primarily used in the electrical industry as a gaseous dielectric medium.
Under pressure, SF₆ provides significantly higher dielectric strength than air or nitrogen, enabling compact equipment design and safe, reliable high-voltage operation.

What SF₆ Does Inside Electrical Equipment
Inside high-voltage equipment, SF₆ performs two critical functions: insulation and arc interruption.
Electrical Insulation
Pressurized SF₆ acts as a highly effective insulating medium between energized components. Its superior dielectric strength prevents unintended electrical discharge, allowing for compact, sealed equipment designs without sacrificing reliability.
Arc Quenching
When a circuit breaker interrupts current, an electrical arc forms between separating contacts. SF₆ rapidly absorbs free electrons and cools the arc plasma, extinguishing it safely and efficiently. This capability allows breakers to interrupt high fault currents while protecting internal components and extending equipment life.
